The march turned towards the Petersen Events Center where a Pitt basketball game was ready to occur. This is where the march first encountered both agresive police presence and angry citizens. While marching up the hill one participant was singled out by police for arrest but a successful unarrest was performed. A quick change of appearance avoided future arrest.

These two angry white men sure were good at posing and yelling. The man on the left just liked to give the finger and scream a lot. The man on the right kept turning around and pointing the the USMC logo on his back and yelling "This is where it's at!" I'm sure both are proud to be immortalized on the web.

Angry White Men Part 3

Angry White Men Part...
18web.jpg, image/jpeg, 500x406

This man felt the need to express his intelligence to everyone by jumping forth from his vehicle and yelling at the marchers. All he could muster was continuous screams of "Fuck You Asshole!" This was the only man along the route who I thought may resort to violence, but he did not. Once he noticed the flashes firing in his direction he moved away. I'm sure he is also proud to be immortalized for all to see.

Note: Is it just me, or does anyone else notice a pattern with the angry people along the route? The only angry people I encountered were middle-aged white men sporting moustaches ans short hair. And they were all so articulate in their views, screaming obscenities and trying to run people over in their Caddy's. These are the faces of war-mongers.

2 points
1 if I had seen you on your little march I would have expressed yself a little better than the guys you encountered did.

2 you seem to imply that the police had no purpose in carrying the batons. When clearly they did since last time your little friends in the masks decided to attack the marine recruitment center.

A victory sign...
by Daniel Papasian Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 12:47 AM

Sure, it was a victory sign in the War to End All Wars.

Which is what they called the first world war once upon a time, too. The irony of that is thick; clearly we were being lied to with the "war to end all wars / war to bring peace" talk. Just like we're being lied to about war to stabilize the mideast/world...

by Sam Monday, Mar. 03, 2003 at 8:41 AM

1. That's good to hear, JonUs. I'd love to have an intelligent, civil discussion with someone whose views differed from my own.

However, absolutely no one -- *no one* -- who expressed opposition to the views of the demonstrators articulated any sort of point. They shouted obscenities. This leads me to believe that they really *don't know* why they oppose our views. Theirs is a conditioned response encouraged by right-wing talk show hosts and Free Republic.

2. *You* seem to imply that everyone at the Convergence condoned the action of the one protestors who threw a brick through one window of the Marine Recruitment Center. That's simply not the case.

Personally, I did and do condone it. The institution of property is an institution of theft and violence. Its destruction (in the case of that window) is not an act of violence, but an act of reclaiming. Besides, the cost of replacing a window is miniscule compare to the immense human cost of war.

3. It's still a victory sign. It stands for victory in the struggle against war and against the exploitation of the many by the few.

I come here when Long SQL queries or compiles are running and time where I would be just sitting here bored. I try to do my posting from home but sometimes I have a few extra minutes.

As for FreeRepublic being my favorite site. I would disagree just the next one I visit after I see the what independent media is putting out for the day.

Jon i find it sad that you seem to charachterize the entire war march and by extension the entire anti-war movement by some kid in a mask breaking the window of the marine recruitment office. If you happened to look outside the window, you would have seen that almost all of the marchers were just ordinary every-day citizens opposing the war. Look beyond what one kid did and see the movement in its entirety before you criticize it by what one of its members did.

I know that there people who are not wearing ski masks and destroying thing but, this website and some of the people on it say that these things are good.

How can you honestly be against the war in Iraq? I understand that war is horrible but sometimes you have to deal with it.

Some perspective
by Quinten Wednesday, Mar. 05, 2003 at 8:14 PM

"I know that there people who are not wearing ski masks and destroying things..."

You need to be more precise. One person broke one window. And it was not at random. It was the window of a military recruitment center. This had a direct link to the cause that the person was protesting for.

And while I don't believe personally in destruction of property, I don't think it's as hard to justify as you seem to. I recommend that you read historian Howard Zinn's treatise "Nine Fallacies on Law and Order." It is published by the South End Press, although it might be possible to find it elsewhere.

In it, Zinn makes one key point. He argues that "Violence, no matter how important the cause, becomes unpardonable the more it becomes indiscriminate; hence war, even for "good" reasons, is very hard to justify in these days of high-level bombing and long-range artillery....Violence might be justifiable as it approaches the focusing and control of surgery." And he goes on to give the example of how resistance to Hitler was justified.

He talks more specifically about civil disobedience and argues that this question of proportionality and discrimination needs to be at the forefront. Even in the situations of utmost urgency with very vital issues at stake (and other means have been exhausted), "[civil disobedience] would have to be guarded, limited, aimed carefully at the source of the injustice, and preferably directed against property rather than people." (48)

I do believe that these criteria have essentially been met here. Massive civil disobedience is one thing that the Bush administration cannot ignore. And the stakes are VERY high. We're talking about one broken window versus the murder of potentially hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

I don't condemn whomever broke that window, although I doubt I would have the chutzpah to do it myself.

Violence
by -- Thursday, Mar. 06, 2003 at 11:40 AM

I'd like to point out that out of all of the events in Pittsburgh, from the J24-26 convergence to the most recent march on M2, there has not been one act of violence committed by demonstrators. The police have in isolated incidences pushed, shoved, or threatened demonstrators, but the demonstrators themselves have been perfect.

What I don't understand is when property destruction became violent. The ultimate impact is paying a monetary sum for immoral actions (if the government can impose fines, why can't the people). Further, every American History class goes on celebrating the Boston Tea Party -- a perfect example of targeted property destruction. Americans know where to look when they fight injustice (to governments' and corporations' wallets), it's in well within our traditions, ethics, and responsibilities to continue these actions, or support them if you don't have the chutzpah!

I was a the march and in my opinon it was small but spectacular. I loved to see all of the assholes in front of the b-ball arena flipping us off, it is a shame that basketball is more important then a peacemovment.
In regard to the cops, they were asses, in the papers they blamed us for blocking the streets when in fact they blocked the streets as much as us. Come join us on March 16th for round #3.

i feel that you people who are always against cops should take a long hard look at yourselves and then ask yourselves why do these cops get angry with us? is it because i am acting like a complete ass? the answer to that is yes you are acting like ASSES. they are only doing their jobs...if you wouldnt be so unruly they wouldnt need to be agressive...it's one thing to protest against something you believe in but it is a completly different thing when you start blaming cops for your poor behavior. you may need them someday so have a litle respect and don't go accussing them for things that didn't happen

Look at the post directly above this one. Yet another pro-war person who can't discuss the issues. No, but they can scream obscenities. Wow... who would have thought?

Please, all of you pro-war people out there, come to the March 16th rally and voice your opinion. Your obscenities and screaming just benefit our cause.

And to address your concerns about my schooling, life and general well being. I am employed and have been working at the same locally owned publication for over five years now. In that time I've also managed to go to engineering school, which I am a mere four classes away from finishing... on the Dean's list no less. In my spare time I've taught myself the art of photography and have become pretty well read in world politics. Thanks for your concern that I'm a "shithead" who knows nothing about the world, but hopefully now you understand that there's a bit more to the story. Unfortunately, you have only convinced everyone who reads this board that you, not I, am the "shithead" to put in your terms. Thanks!

If it wasn't for the ten or so people I allied with to continue the march past the Pro-War frat Delta Upsilon, there would have been alot of frat boys (and girls) skulls busted. We were marching for peace. You were posted in front of your liberal fraternity with hatred in your hearts. We continued the march past you guys to save your reputations (and your brains) from being splattered all over Forbes Avenue.
So, in retrospect you owe your safety to the 10 or so protesters who decided that you were worth anything at all.
Much Love for the fire of Activism!

And if you want to threaten someone with your childish threats aim at a target that won't retaliate with fiery passion against you.

Yes you should be treated this way. Learn to stand up and fight for what is right and don't be an ignorant hippie. Without a military fighting to end oppression we would be in oppression right now. Most of us soldiers in Iraq support Bush because we know what is going on because we are actually their. We don't rely on the biased and corrupted media for our news. If you are intelligent enough to understand this then you will agree with me that a lot of news organizations can tell people one thing and the majority will believe them because they have the funds to broadcast garbage to people. Don't rely on the media for news about certain things but instead be opened minded and research for yourself. Thank you.

We are in oppression right now. Habeus corpus is a thing of the past. So is privacy. Travel is being restricted. People are actively encouraged to spy on their neighbors and coworkers. This place is turning into the USSA.
