Welcome to this week's edition of Rustbelt Radio, the Pittsburgh Independent Media Center's bi-weekly review of the news from the grassroots, news overlooked by the corporate media.

On today's show...

We bring you "Calls From Home" a special holiday program which brings the voices of family members of prisoners to the airwaves as they send greetings to those incarcerated in the US prison system.

Rustbelt Radio is broadcast live from WRCT studios every other Monday at 6 PM on 88.3 FM in Pittsburgh, and the program airs again on WRCT every Tuesday morning at 9AM.

We can also be heard weekly on the following stations:

WIUP 90.1 FM in Indiana
WNJR 91.7 FM in Washington
WLRI 93 FM in eastern Pennsylvania
and FRSC 101.1 FM in Santa Cruz, California

Calls from home

One of the most celebrated aspects of the holiday season is the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. However, for the over 2.3 million prisoners incarcerated in the US prison system, this holiday dream will not come true this year. Equally affected were the millions of parents, children, husbands, wives, friends and relatives of these prisoners.

Today, Rustbelt Radio brings you "Calls from Home" a special holiday program produced by Thousand Kites, which is a project of Appalshop, an Appalachian-based arts and education center.

According to their website: [quote] Thousand Kites is a national project that works directly with stakeholders using communication strategies and campaigns to engage citizens and build grassroots power. It uses performance, web, video, and radio to open a public space for incarcerated people, corrections officials, the formerly incarcerated, grassroots activists, and ordinary citizens to dialogue and organize around United State’s criminal justice system [end quote]

Rustbelt Radio now brings you this special 1 hour "Calls from Home" program, which is the 12th annual show that connects prisoners and their loved ones during the holiday season:

Calendar of Events

And now we present the Indymedia Calendar of Events:

On Wednesdays from 7 - 10 pm, Fed Up!, Pittsburgh's chapter of the Human Rights Coalition, has their weekly event entitled "Write on! Letters for Prisoner's Rights." They need help answering the 60 letters a month from people in prison dealing with abuse and neglect. Write on is help at the Thomas Merton Center, 5129 Penn Avenue, in Garfield. You can call 412-361-3022 ext. 4 for more information.

Every Sunday from 4 -7pm, book 'em has their packing day to send books to people incarcerated. Also located at the Thomas Merton Center at 5129 Penn Avenue in Garfield. You can also call 412-361-3022 for information.

There is a Human Rights Letter-writing salon put on by Amnesty International, where activists get together to write letters about human rights abuses, every Sunday from 4-6pm at Kiva Han on South Craig St. in Oakland.
