Lethal injection is now virtually the universal method of execution in the United States, with all but two of the 46 executions carried out there during 2010 being by this method.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas — With his back turned and writing on a piece of paper, security guard Brian Williams never saw Gayland Bradford come up behind him at a Dallas grocery store.
As seen on a surveillance video, Bradford pulls a pistol, says nothing and without warning shoots the 29-year-old Williams in the back. He fires three more times at the mortally wounded Williams, then yells for a companion who joins him in trying to take cash from a register. They left with $7 taken from Williams, who died about an hour later.
Bradford is set for lethal injection Wednesday evening in Huntsville for the December 1988 slaying. The U.S. Supreme Court last week refused to reconsider his appeals, clearing the way for him to become the fourth Texas inmate executed this year.
Lethal injection is now virtually the universal method of execution in the United States, with all but two of the 46 executions carried out there during 2010 being by this method. Of the 1,234 executions in the USA to the end of 2010, 1,060 have been by lethal injection, including those of ten women. The 1000th lethal injection was carried out on July 21st, 2009 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville on multiple murderer Marvallous Keene. A state by state analysis is below – this is kept up to date.
