The security guard who took down a man allegedly practicing karate moves on an 85-year-old at Fisherman’s Wharf was honored by police Thursday.

Fisherman’s friend: Security guard Ryan Jones says it was all in a day’s work when he detained a man at Fisherman’s Wharf who allegedly attacked an elderly fellow.

The security guard who took down a man allegedly practicing karate moves on an 85-year-old at Fisherman’s Wharf was honored by police Thursday.

The modest Ryan Jones, 25, of Modesto, said he was only doing his job when he slapped handcuffs on the brawling transient last week. On Thursday, Jones was praised by cops during a briefing on crime trends.

Witnesses said the assailant, 45-year-old Markus Leo Husarek, was practicing martial arts moves at Jefferson and Mason streets on May 2.

As an elderly man walked past, Husarek suddenly "grabbed him around the neck from behind and threw him to the ground," police said. The attack appeared unprovoked.

The victim, a San Francisco resident, was transported to California Pacific Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He suffered lacerations and required staples on his head, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. His condition has since improved.

Police said if it wasn’t for Jones, there might have been more victims. Jones, a supervisor for Cypress Private Security, said he caught the aftermath of the assault.

He talked to witness, got a description of Husarek, and followed him for about 100 yards, hoping to get close enough to detain him. Jones said he sprung into action when Husarek approached an Asian couple.

"He attempted to put his hand on the female," he said. "That’s when I grabbed him."

Husarek fought back, throwing elbows, Jones said. But Jones pinned him down and got him into handcuffs.

Three days later, Husarek, who has a previous conviction for making criminal threats, pleaded not guilty to assault and elder abuse charges. His preliminary hearing is set for Wednesday.

Jones, who has been working in security for five years, said he was honored to be recognized by police, but said the arrest was all in a day’s work. "I do stuff like this on a daily basis," he said.
