Casino Security Guard Pulls Attacker from RCMP Officer
by Security Guards Jobs News Sunday, May. 15, 2011 at 1:19 AM

According to Ferguson and other witnesses, the man charged with the assault repeatedly punched the officer in the head. They say he also tried to take the RCMP officer's gun from its holster. Armstrong said it's "rare" for an assault complainant to assault a responding officer. Police do not want the officer to speak to the media, said Armstrong.

Warni Ferguson, a Great Canadian Casino gaming security officer, subdued the man who is charged with assaulting a Nanaimo RCMP officer Thursday night.

The security officer who subdued a man who police say was beating on a female RCMP officer Thursday night at Port Place Shopping Centre doesn't consider himself a hero.

Warni Ferguson, a gaming security officer at the Great Canadian Casino, heard a commotion at approximately 7 p.m. and saw the officer fall after being struck by the alleged assailant.

"When I saw what was happening and realized she was in trouble it was just instinctive to try to help as best I could," said Ferguson, 28.

The officer was responding to a report of an assault at the casino.

And the man who is charged with attacking her was allegedly the victim of the initial complaint.

Nanaimo RCMP said they could not confirm that there was an earlier assault at the casino, said spokeswoman Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong.

Ferguson, who was in the casino at the time, also couldn't say an assault had taken place.

"As far as I know, there was no assault on our property. We didn't even know the RCMP had been called," he said.

Ferguson "took down" the 39-year-old suspect and held him until police backup arrived.

The RCMP officer, a 13-year veteran who was alone when she arrived at the scene, tried to interview the alleged victim of the initial complaint.

"She will be a witness when the case comes to court so she will not be doing interviews."

Ferguson was able to pull the attacker off of the officer in the Port Place parking lot.

He yelled to his colleagues at the casino to call 911 and it was just a matter of minutes before other RCMP officers arrived at the mall and arrested the suspect.

Jason Joseph Speare appeared in provincial court on Friday, facing charges of assaulting a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer. He appeared in court Friday and will remain in custody until his next appearance on May 31.

The officer was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment of injuries to her hand and face. She was released from hospital and is recuperating at home, said Armstrong.
