CAMPAIGN FOR THE
EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT
Arts Community Joins Small Business Effort in
Fight for Labor Law Reform
Pittsburgh – The TypewriterGirls Poetry Cabaret will host an event
Sunday, July 7 at Your Inner Vagabond Coffeehouse & World Lounge
supporting efforts to pass the Employee Free Choice Act and level the
playing field for workers seeking to organize unions in a system stacked
against them. The Employee Free Choice Act is a pending piece of
legislation that would put the choice to form a union in the hands of
workers, not corporations. In addition, the Employee Free Choice Act
would impose stricter penalties on corporations that violate the law by
harassing and intimidating workers who try to form a union.
This event will feature poetry by Renee Alberts, author of No Water
(Speed and Briscoe, 2009), Adam Atkinson, Co-Director of Open Thread,
Mary Biddinger, author of Prairie Fever (Steel Toe Books, 2007) and
Editor of the Akron Series in Poetry, and Jay Robinson, Co-editor of
Barn Owl Review. Punk Rock Burlesque to be performed by Shrimp Scanty of
the Bridge City Bombshells, and escape artistry by Dave Doyle, aka
Pester the Jester. There will also be music by Between Liberties, a
progressive acoustic musical experiment out of Pittsburgh, and a dance
party courtesy of DJ Randy Spinster.
“We thought it was high time for those of us active in the arts
community to weigh in on this issue”, said Crystal Hoffman, spokesperson
for the TypeWriterGirls. “Thousands of artists are self-employed, small
business people and we want to let the corporate world know they don’t
speak for us when they oppose the Employee Free Choice Act and labor law
reform. Workers with good-paying union jobs make good customers and a
healthier economy for everyone”, according to Hoffman.
