Sixty-three years ago today (8-9-08) the United States government detonated a second nuclear bomb on the people of Japan killing 80,000 children, women & men. ”Fat Boy”, as it was perversely named, was dropped three days following the explosion of “Little Boy” that instantly killed over 140,000 people in Hiroshima. In the following days thousands more died horrific deaths from burns and radiation poisoning.

A small group of Pittsburghers held a memorial service outside the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (SEI), which is largely funded by the US military for various weapons software research. http://www.sei.cmu.edu Participants represented The American Friends Service Committee, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Pittsburgh’s Raging Grannies, The Thomas Merton Center for Peace and Justice, Pax Christi, Black Voices for Peace, and was organized by Duncan & Porter House.

A profoundly moving and haunting threnody for the victims of Hiroshima composed by K. Penderedki played during the vigil. And in a symbolic gesture the steps of the SEI were washed.
