On Wednesday, May 1 members of United Steelworkers Local 5032 and their supporters rallied outside Calgon Carbon’s (NYSE: CCC) annual shareholder’s meeting. Union members have been locked out of their jobs at the company’s Neville Island facility for just over two months. The company is demanded that union workers submit to massive cuts in healthcare and pensions before returning to work; locked out union members have stated that they are committed to winning a fair contract that preserves their pensions and keeps healthcare affordable.

Workers said they were particularly frustrated by the company’s betrayal of their trust. “When this company was losing money they told us to ‘trust in teamwork’ and take concessions to keep the company alive. Now Calgon is turning major profits and they still want us to take concessions,” said Jerry Morton, Unit President USW Local 5032-15. Last year Calgon’s profits were greater than the previous nine years combined.

The rally started at around noon featuring speakers from the Steelworkers, Jobs with Justice, the Mon Valley Unemployed Committee and the Labor Religion Coalition. Members from the Allegheny County Labor Council, the Communications Workers of America, the International Association of Machinists, the Service Employees International Union, and the Coalition of Labor Union Women were among the approximately 100 supporters who attended the rally.

After the rally, the Steelworkers and their supporters marched to the company’s headquarters. Robinson Township Police who claimed that the gathering was blocking traffic briefly harassed the crowd, but after a few minutes the police backed off.

Representatives from Jobs with Justice broke from the crowd to approach the building to deliver a petition in support of the workers to Calgon CEO John Stanik. They were turned away at the door but allowed to leave their petition, with nearly 2,000 signatures, behind.

Then, members of USW Local 5032, most of whom own small amounts of stock in the company, entered the shareholder’s meeting to confront management. Inside the meeting, union workers and supporters questioned company officials about the company’s hard line approach to labor relations and its attack on local 5032. Management was clearly on the run and CEO John Stanik even said from the podium, “I’m not sure if [locking the workers out] was a good idea” and “I want to get those guys back to work.”

Negotiations, which have been stalled for weeks, are set to resume tomorrow (May 1). Union officials say they’re cautiously optimistic about getting back to work and reaching and agreement but they’re committed to fighting for as long as it takes to win a fair contract.
