Calgon Carbon Locks Out Workers on Neville Island, Benefit to be held March 25

Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corp. locked out 63 members of USW Local 5032 who work at the Neville Island facility at midnight, Feb. 29.

Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corp. locked out 63 members of USW Local 5032 who work at the Neville Island facility at midnight, Feb. 29.

Union members set up picket lines at the plant’s two entrances while management runs the place without longtime workers. Union pickets are maintaining a vigilant 24-hour watch on the plant, and have been joined by Steelworkers and other local supporters.

Union workers are fighting to maintain family health care benefits as well as their pension plans, both of which management wants to gut, said District 10 staff representative Charles Leonard.
Calgon Carbon spokespersons claim to the local media that the company wants workers to accept a slashed benefits package, but Leonard said of management’s demands: "I think they just want to break the union. It’s not going to happen."

District 10 Steelworkers are rallying to the defense of the locked out Calgon workers, and vow to expand the struggle if a fair contract offer from management is not forthcoming. USW Local 3657 members in downtown Pittsburgh recently delivered a load of food to strikers, and predict a groundswell of community support for the strikers if management prolongs the lockout.

Jerry Morton, Calgon unit president who has worked there since 1979, said Local 5032 members have been more than reasonable with management in negotiations.
“Since 1999, we’ve been self-directed,” said Morton. “Our slogan was to ‘improved trust and teamwork,’ We worked pretty well with management up until this contract. Now, Calgon management wants more.”

Local 5032 President Ron Marino says it’s a more than suspicious that management would lock out the USW when the local has an active organizing campaign for 31 additional workers in the equipment and assembly building. These unorganized workers only earn half the wages of union employees, who average around $18 an hour. An NLRB election is now scheduled for the non-union workers on March 27.
Locked out employees here are communicating with organized Calgon workers at other plant sites to develop a broader strategy.

A benefit concert and “bowlathon” is now scheduled at the Paradise Island Bowl, 7601 Grand Ave., Neville Island, on March 25, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., to aid locked out Calgon workers. Union and community friends are welcomed to attend.
Union workers at this Calgon facility make products and provide services to remove impurities from water and air, as well as reactivating spent carbon for filtration systems and impregnation carbons for personal respirator and other uses.

Let's get this correct. This company is employing people. The company could easily move overseas, which it has not. The employees are not happy, so instead of making their own company or getting other jobs, they strike.

The company then hires people who want to work and you call this a lock out?

wrong. it's about employee rights. would you like it if your employer cut your benefits and flushed your pention? me either. what is letting big business get away with what they do is employees too afraid to stand up for themselves. good for these workers for standing up for their rights.

The labor dispute at Calgon is not a strike, it is a lockout. The USW members at Calgon are now and have always been prepared to return to work under the terms of the old collective bargaining agreement.

A lockout is the employer's version of a strike. The company is saying 'agree to this new contract or we won't let you come to work'

This situation is sad at best. The majority of guys working in the plant are good guys. Like any plant, there are a few bad apples. I worked in that plant and tried to show them how to improve productivity and harmony amonst the workers. Unfortunately, the few bad apples spoil it for everyone. Not that I agree with CCC management, heaven knows, they are a bunch of snakes. But, I don't agree with the ideas of the union leaders, particullarly, the Morton brothers. However, I can honestly say that Jerry Morton is doing what he feels is best for the workers. I wouldn't wish anyone to loose their job. People are just trying to put food on the table. For the workers own best interest, I hope the strike ends before something drastic happens. I wish them the best of luck. There is an old saying. A drowning man will grab even the edge of a sword.

I wish the strikers the best of luck but you are not going to get what you want. I used to be the E&I Coach at Big Sandy Plant. I had a great group of guys in the shop and I have a lot of respect for them. As a manager you do what is best for the company. You have to see the big picture. Calgon could easily move all of its Reactivation to Big Sandy. The employees on the island better be careful. They will keep you out until you agree to their terms. What you guys don't understand is that you not losing your pention they are just freezing it. They did the same thing to the salary employess back in 2006. They will contribute to your 401K. The days of a pention and free medical beneifts are over. Companys just can't pay for it and stay in business. Go Calgon. I wish I was still at Big Sandy, family problems caused me to leave. 50% Pay Raises

Trying to Strip Employees’ Benefits & Pension While Giving Themselves 50% Pay Hikes

Yes, you heard it right. Management at Calgon Carbon, the Pittsburgh-based company specializing in water and air purification systems, has locked out 60 union workers, trying to force them to accept big cuts in health insurance and pensions.

At the same time, Calgon bosses are raking in money like never before. According government filings, top management issued themselves raises averaging more than 50% last year. That’s at the same time they want to freeze and replace the retirees’ pensions plan, and slash health insurance for people who’ve worked a lifetime around dangerous heavy metals, lead, benzene, etc.

The workers, proud members of United Steelworkers Local 5032, are not taking it sitting down. A 24-hour picket line is up at the plant. They’re not bending to company demands. Community support is growing. Union workers will continue this fight to the end to uphold a living wage for Western Pennsylvania families!

The Big Picture

And you have to see the big picture, Brian. The guys on Neville Island took concessionary contracts for the better part of three decades. It was those guys who kept the company afloat through years of losses and tight margins caused by failed attempts at diversification. Now (largely because of the hard work of the guys on Neville Island) the company is turning a profit. The with new EPA regulations and duties on imports from China the the activated carbon market is booming. In 2007, Calgon's profits were greater than the previous nine years combined!

So take a look at the bigger picture; these guys kept Calgon alive. Now Calgon is turning windfall profits, management is taking giant pay increases and these guys are being asked to take more cuts in health care and pension contributions.

"What you guys don't understand is that you not losing your pension they are just freezing it."

What you don't understand is the guys on Neville Island work with mercury, lead, silver nitrate and a whole bunch of other poisonous substances every day. After spending an entire career working with poison they can't afford to take any cuts or reductions in pensions or health care.

Yes Bob, it was a lockout. As an X Calgon Manager that was at one of the donor plants (salary people working at the Neville Island plant. For Example, Jim Robbins bragged of making nearly $10,000 per month and stated let them dumb bastards stay out, I'm getting rich! The same individual could not wait until the Catlettsburg plant went out on strike
. However the Union guys were smart enough not to walk out. The company (salary) employees often make stabs at the union employees. The Company employees need to understand, if it were not for the union employees Calgon Carbon would fail.

Sunny.... Nearly all Calgon Managers are snakes... The ones that are not must protect themselves or live a short career.
Why would any company only keep their managers 2-3 years.
The company is ran by monkeys... I mean the upper management.
