Martin Luther King Jr's assassination occurred nearly 40 years ago, on April 4th, 1968. Dr. King was only 39 when his life was cut short. However, in his time, he inspired thousands of black--and white--Americans to join the 1960's civil rights movement. King organized and led marches for blacks' right to vote, desegregation, and labor rights. He also worked to build movements against poverty and militarism. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means.

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, Rustbelt Radio brings you a special from the Pacifica Radio Archives show From The Vault. These recordings span 11 years from 1957 to just a few weeks before he was killed in 1968. We begin with an introduction from Pacifica producer Ambrose Lane:
