The block party demonstrated what Pittsburgh as a radical activist community
can do best! The party was organized by a completely decentralized,
non-hierarchical group of people who worked on a voluntary co-operative
basis. We had support from a number of businesses, groups, and neighbors. It
was both fun and safe.
The party was not without its share of problems, namely The Pittsburgh
Police Department. They failed to realize that the party was not just
organized by one individual, or by one group, but the party organizing was
comprised of numerous individuals, freely associating with the event. They
block party was just that a block party - a community event where the
direction of the party is determined by its members. The police may have
shut down our fun an hour early, but what came out of that repression speaks
volumes. We'd like to take this moment to give mad props to our neighbors,
who when the police turned off our PA system, they turned on their stereo
(to KRS-1 - The Sound of the Police). To our friends, who gave the cops hell
about their intrusion, to everyone who felt the urge to yell and scream, and
everyone who stuck around and didn't run away. We are the community and we
are strong.
