Yesterday, Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants held a vigil and march to support rights for immigrants, easier and fairer path to legal immigration, and amnesty for all undocumented workers already in the United States. By the time the rally at Mellon Point Park dispersed, about 150 people (correct me if I'm off, I'm not great at estimating crowd sizes) were in attendence, including many immigrants, undocumented workers, and children of immigrants. After the megaphone was opened up to anyone who wished to speak, the first was an undocumented immigrant who told the crowd through a translator that there are no jobs in Mexico, so she came here so that her children would not starve.

The march along the sidewalks was escorted by two bike cops and observed by at least two volunteers from the ACLU. There was one counter-protestor bearing a sign which read at different times, "get out of my country", "Seal the Border", and other things. Below are some pictures from the vigil, march, and rally.

deport those illegals
by aaaa Tuesday, May. 02, 2006 at 8:41 PM

To bad the INS was not there, they could have arrested all those illegals and deported them all back to mexico.

They took our jobs!!!
by richard Saturday, May. 27, 2006 at 4:18 PM

Yeah great, a bunch of students are protesting for the rights of illegal immigrants. To grant amnesty to these people is a slap in the face to blue collar contractors, Americans with a GED and everyone else who is trying to get into this country from all over the world. These illegals are depressing the wages of construction jobs, hotel housekeeping jobs, utility company jobs, farming jobs and all other types of jobs that THEY say Americans won't do.

I say that we put land mines all over that border to the south see if they want to sneak across then. Ha haha

Honestly, I didn't know what side of this issues to take (I veer more to the moderate-right of the spectrum) but after I read this article I made my mind up: leave things the way they are because I'm sure as hell not picking oranges 12 hours a day in the blistering Florida heat.

Immigrant Welfare Cheat!
by 2 minuteman Monday, Apr. 02, 2007 at 6:58 PM

The worst immigrant welfare cheat in the US is none other than Mario Lemieux. I think that's what the conservatives mean when they talk about people crossing the borders looking for handouts.

"people crossing the borders looking for handouts."
by death to imperialism Saturday, Dec. 01, 2007 at 6:42 AM

When Americans cross your borders, they aren't looking for handouts. They're looking for oil to steal and women to rape. Anyone who resists, the torture.
