About 100 turned out for a March for Immigrants' Rights (part of "April 10th National Day of Action for Immigrants' Rights"). The event was organized by Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants for Immigrants' Rights (for info, contact issuesfirst@gmail.com).

Pgh March for Immigrants' Rights - correction

I appreciate the coverage of Indymedia of our march. It was very exciting and many of you came in our support, and many others from other parts of the county.
However, I need to make an important correction and make it clear that this march is not a project of the Thomas Merton Center nor it was organized by the Thomas Merton Center although several of the organizers are TMC activists.
It was organized by the Pittsburgh Friends of Immigrants for Immigrants' Rights (PFOI), which I formally founded on February of this year. So please, make the appropriate correction as it should be. Thanks.

Whose Land was their land

I am confused by the "this land was their land" sign. This was for immigrant's rights, not Native Americans rights... And, Pennsylvania is nowhere near the lands Polk stole in the Mexico War...
Signs like this don't reflect well on an otherwise good protest.
Completely Off Base

WHat a crying shame, to tie up the streets for such a meaningless protest. It must have been such a complete failure, since there was no word of hippie freaks getting tasered.
I especially like the stupid sign of "Americans are Immigrants". No, Really?
I remember now! They ALL had to come through an immigration checkpoint, like Ellis Island! (Except for the slaves of course - they were naturalized allready).
When the goddamn Mexican border-jumpers can haul their stinky asses into the US legally, they can work all they want. THese motherfuckers receive more in government "entitlements" than a legal citizen. You can make arguements either way about the morality of that, but practicality calls for government monies to be spent on citizens first.
Just because Mexico is a shithole, with no viable government or economy, does not give their people the right to come to America illegally.
And you cannot confuse the issue by stating that what they do should be legal, and that they cannot be given amnesty fo9r something that is not wrong.....
CeeCee...you are just a spotlight-grabbing whiner. there are not enough spics to jump a bandwagon here, dumb-ass.
Not really off base

That sign is not totally off base. This was their land. Just because the conditions of the Mexican War didn't reach Pennsylvania, does not mean that a woman cannot hold a sign. Her message is representing the message that was seen across America, not just Southwest Pennsylvania.

Wow Mr. Kramer, I am glad to see your profanity and lack of tact. It makes me feel better that I am not on your side.
Anywho, would you like to see your country treat foreigners like garbage more than they already have?
America is built on diversity.
Do you know how many undocumented immigrants are in this country that are not from Mexico? There are a lot. Most of them are here on expired visas. The whole point of the guest-worker program is too put them on a path of naturalization. I admit that immigration is a problem, and something needs to be done. However, you cannot round them up and send them back. It is impossible, it cannot be done. You would spend more money on rounding them and containing them, then putting them on a path to naturalization.
If you really want to solve the problem of immigration write to your Congressmen/Congresswomen and ask them to not support legislation that deregulates corporations or provides corporations with benefits. Corporations are the only reason Mexican citizens come here, because they provide jobs to illegal immigrants. And Bush is not helping either when he favors unethical corporations. So complain to the President or your reps in Washington.
Also, a lot of Mexican immigrants die on their way back over the border to give things to their families. Just letting you know...

I was not surprised to see some counter protestors there. It doesn't surprise me.
ON the drug comment: True. However, meth is gaining popularity and there is a chance that the Amish could be manufacturing meth. :) Actually a lot of meth producers go down to Mexico and buy pseudoephederine (sp?). Sorry, I digress.

Isn't it amazing how quickly Americans give up their rights to protect the rights of others?
