This Saturday: Another Counter-Recruitment Protest in Oakland

Saturday, August 27: Anti-war/Counter Military Recruitment Protest in Oakland,

Saturday, August 27: Anti-war/Counter Military Recruitment Protest.

POG continues to counter military recruitment and demands that all charges be dropped against the protesters brutalized at last Saturday’s demonstration at the military recruitment station in Oakland.

This Saturday, Aug. 27 from 11am to 1pm at 3712 Forbes Ave. (Forbes Ave., between Atwood and Bouquet streets in Oakland), we will again protest at the military recruitment center. We hope that following the successful shutdown of the military recruitment center on Aug. 6 and Aug. 20, and given the police violence that followed A20, people will make a special effort to attend this event.

This picket is the next in POG’s ongoing counter-recruitment campaign whose aim is to stop the war in Iraq, educate young people on the realities of military enlistment, and counter the military/ government propaganda apparatus. This Saturday's picket rounds off a successful summer of counter-recruitment organizing by POG and others. Join us for the kick off a new season of dissent, as we say 'no' to military recruitment in our town. If the government won't stop the war, the people will. The event will be similar to the bi-weekly pickets we held throughout June and July in which participants stand on the sidewalk in front of the station, holding signs and distributing informational flyers about military recruitment practices and the realities of military service to passersby.

Thanks for your continued support and we hope to see you there.

If you have any questions feel free to contact us.

For more information on our overall campaign see http://www.organizepittsburgh.org

In solidarity,
POG

I dare you to show your support for this war by meeting the protesters at the recruiting station so you can promptly enlist. but, you won't because you're a dickless coward living in the sticks who won't put their money where their mouth is. you fucking sicken me.

Screw Em
by PgGoR Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 12:33 PM

I'll be there. Screw the military. I hate those bastards. Nothing but a bunch of dupes and jugheads. The kids being recruited into that miserable "service" are being duped. They are too young an gullible to realize what is being done to them. We need to seriously educate these kids. It is shameful what the Bush War Machine is doing in the name of the American people. This war of opportunity in Iraq has about as much to do with democracy, justice and equality for the "oppressed" Iraqis as George Bush has to do with being a hardworking self-made man. We need to use all means necessary to take back our country from the haters and neo-cons. That is what the military should be fighting.

Good timing
by George Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 1:47 PM

I like the timing of this protest - there will be a larger population in Oakland, with all the students returning and a good number of parents still around. I'll do my best to be there, though I'm scheduled to work.

give 'em hell
by IL Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 3:10 PM

give them hell from all of us who cannot be there on saturday! and, dear protesters, don't pay much attention to the cowardly bastards who keep wishing for more tasering and our eternal torment in the lowest depths of hell; when the time is right this country will see that it's always been the dissenters who turn out to be right in the end. by doing what you're doing about military recruitment you're only saving more innocent lives. the more they try to stop us, the more fiercely we will fight.

hasta la victoria, siempre! (yes, i'm quoting a communist. you got a problem with it, all you neo-cons out there?)

An End to Imerial Militarism
by brother jon Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 5:40 PM

Why do we even need a military if not to fight for the protection of the corrupt ruling classes. The United States military should be abolished. The Myrmadon Warrior is the mindless tool of the neo-con imperial ambition. If we were to do away with the military entirely the world wold be a far safer and better place. All of the rebellions and insurgency in the world today is fighting for freedom from one thing ..... American imperialism and militarism. Do away with the American military and we do away with terrorism and insurgency, for nothing would be left to fight on the grand global scale. Power to the protestors. Power to the insurgency.

A Brief Inspirational Passage
by Ecommunist (formerly Sal Paradise) Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 at 9:03 PM

As you prepare to go out and once again shut down military recruitment in Pittsburgh later this morning, please remember the following words of Che Guevara.

"Violence is not the monopoly of the exploiters and as such the exploited can use it, too, and what is more, ought to use it when the moment arrives....We should not fear violence, the midwife of new societies; but violence should be unleased at that precise moment in which the leaders have found the most favorable circumstances...."

A brief Passage To Reflect On

As you prepare to go out and once again shut down military recruitment in Pittsburgh later this morning, please remember the following words of Che Guevara.

"OOOWWW. OH FUCK. MY HANDS. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY HANDS. OOWW SHIT. Hey, could you do me a favor and scratch my nose for me BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY HANDS. OUCH , THAT FUCKING HURTS, MAN!"

"Who cares who saddam murdered, he wasn't fucking with us! "

Exactly my point, he was just murdering Arabs, who cares? Nice attitude.

As far as your hissy fit that anyone holding differing views on this war should enlist, does that mean only women that have had abortions can have an opinion on it? Makes as much sense as you do.

unbelivable doesn't represent all of us
by just another pgh anarchist Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005 at 11:19 AM

I thought this was obvious, but let me make it clear: unbelievable's rationale, while true, is not the main reason why I oppose this war.

Saddam Hussein was a fucking dictator, and as a lover of *real* freedom I'm not shedding over tears over his demise. And, I stand in solidarity with our Iraqi cousins over there, and I certainly do care that Saddam was killing Iraqis.

But, that being said, it is no measure of improvement to replace one police state with another-- especially if in doing so, hundreds of thousands of innocent people have their quality of life- or life itself- destroyed. Even if the US is successful, it will be replacing a system of military force (and we are a LONG way from a system of military force being out of Iraq) with a system of economic and political force. I'm also afraid of the expansion of US militarism and imperialism and see it as a greater threat to freedom worldwide than Saddam.

It's not that we don't care about the Iraqi people, it's because we care about the freedom of *all* people.

Plus arguing about Saddam is so 2003. He's already out of power, how do you expect that argument to work today?

Saddam smiled...
by T. J. Hicks Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005 at 12:33 PM

... when his spiritual brothers took off the lady's glasses and used pepper (or 'peper, like the flag-sucking moron typed above) spray, a chemical weapon on her, when the taser was used, when the old lady was bitten. Saddam also smile when his spiritual brother Chief McNeilly and the lousy SWAT team (viva Cecil Brookins !) were standing by to quash free speech.
A bunch of low rent Saddams in blue, (or really obvious plain clothes)hell, alot of them even have the same moustache!

Mr Hicks
by hogguy Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005 at 12:51 PM

Mr. Hicks. I suppose you feel it’s alright to march with out a permit, destroy private property, obstruct roadways and insite a riot. If you would be orderly and listen to what you (and your group) are told this all would not have happened. I think you are just a 1960s hippie wanna be.looking for attention. The truth about this war is that back in 1980 President Jimmy Carter dropped the ball with the Iranian hostage crisis. He should have supported the Shaw. Sooner or later something was going to give. If he would have done something then things would have been different now. The police are just doing there jobs

just doing 'there' (sic) jobs
by T.J. Hicks Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005 at 12:58 PM

Aaah, the Nuremberg defense, how quaint. The Fedayin Saddam are just doing their jobs, like the 9/11 hijackers. I guess no propert get destroyed, nor is traffic obstructed by the crusader, mercenary, rent-a-cops of the US military.

Saddam is a socialist so I guess he can kill anyone he wants to, right? Not that I support the war, but damn that's just ignorant.

still, tough shit
by unbelievable OP Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at 4:43 AM

Cry me a river. Where were we when the genocides were taking place in Africa? We ARE NOT the world's police, and the Kurds still aint the reason we went in there. So all you bleeding hearts who don't give 2 shits about a people you couldn't find on a map prior to the illegal war and use it as one of MANY bullshit justifications for going there can kiss my ass because you're all full of shit. Can't have compassion for somebody on the other side of the world and viciously condemn your neighbor for demonstrating against this occupation, that is why you are a damn phoney.
