Canaries in the Coalfields and Tri-State Citizens Mining Network organized a march and rally downtown to confront the Coal Industry at their national show at the David Lawrence Convention Center. Speakers addrsesed a crowd of 60-80 people at both ends of the march, marchers sung "16 Tons" and "Bella Ciao" with the Steel City Gum Bandits on the march, denounced the offices of Duquesne Light on Liberty Avenue, and ended outside the Convention Center as Coal Executives and their vendors gathered outside . Old and young residents came from Pittsburgh, where air quality is poor due to coal-fired power, from surrounding counties in Pennsylvania affected by longwall mining, and from West Virginia where the landscape is being destroyed by Mountaintop Removal Mining. Also, activists from Mountain Justice Sum mer travelled to Pittsburgh for the events.
On the previous Sunday a conference was held on Coal Mining's costs and empacts on communities, the environment, and workers, as well as realistic alternatives. See June 6th's Rustbelt Radio for coverage and audio of the conference.
