Mirant Energy(Formerly Southern Energy), now owns most of the generators PEPCO used to own. They have proven to be a dirty and aggressively "pro-coal" company. THEY WILL NOT DISCUSS THEIR SOURCE OF COAL-only that CSX and Conrail ship it! They act like they've got something to hide, and in coal there is but one skeleton in the closet dependant on the source of the coal: MTR MINING!. As a result, it is reasonable to suspect that they have made a number of purchases from Massey Energy-the company responsible for some of the worst MTR mining abuses!

Since Mirant refuses to discuss their source of coal and has had a load of connectins to corporate scandals in their past(everyone from Bu$h to Enron), it stands to reason their refusal to talk about their coal source puts them in the same category as a pharmaceutical firm that will not discuss whether they do business with Huntingdon Lifes Sciences, nor committ to not doing so.

Since 90% of all coal burned in the US is used to generate electricity, and since Mirant is one of the biggest owners of generating plants around here, it stands to reason that a lot of Massey's coal is ending up in Mirant's boilers!

Please CALL and EMAIL Mirant Energy to ask that they agree to NOT TO BUY COAL from Massey Energy. Remember, their refusal to discuss the source of their coal can only mean they have something to hide-and that something can only be MTR mining!

In addition, take advantage of your right to buy your electicity from one of Mirant's many competitors. PEPCO can send you power from any of a variety of producers, just as Mirant could choose to buy their coal from any of the options other than Massey offered through CSX.

This worksheet verifies on line # 9 ,#74, #91, #92, #108,#111, #128, #135, #136, #146,#198, and #202 that they ship coal for Massey Coal-the company that is tearing the heart out of Appalacia. BTW, they even handle coal from Peabody-the company responsible for forced relocation of Native Americans from Big Mountain!

Given the vast number of coal companies CSX offers access to that have no connection to Massey, with 224 total listing, their is no excuse for any utility to buy coal from Massey Energy! There are a great many parent companies listed, all for convenient shipment via CSX rail.
