POG Shuts Down Military Recruitment Center in Oakland
by Nina Van Zandt Saturday, May. 14, 2005 at 12:03 PM

On Saturday, May 14th, twenty members and supporters of Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) shut down the primary military recruitment center in Pittsburgh. Located in the heart of Oakland, the neighborhood where three of Pittsburgh’s universities are located, the center serves as the operation base for multiple army recruitment teams.

At 11:30am, three people unfurled a banner reading “End Recruitment, End War” at the front door, effectively blocking access to the center. Recruiters tried, but were unable to gain access to the building for 30 minutes until Pittsburgh police arrived and protesters moved onto the sidewalk under threat of arrest. It’s unclear what the effectiveness of the direct action was (we heard one confirmed report that at least one previously scheduled appointment didn’t show up).

The protest continued for another hour until the center closed at 1pm. Protesters lined the sidewalk with signs, “You can’t be all that you can be if you’re dead,” “Let’s really make it an army of one,” “Shut Down Military Recruitment,” “Recruiters Lie, People Die,” etc. Protesters handed out a hundred flyers to pedestrians about the distortions, lies, and misrepresentation that recruiters engage in to meet their quotas.

Reaction from passersby was generally positive with dozens of supportive horn honks and thumbs up. Six different people stopped to talk, including one soldier who recently returned from Iraq. The less positive responses from passing cars consisted of profane gestures from a car with air force bumper stickers along with the usual shouts of “get a job” and “hippies” blah, blah, blah.

The recruiters engaged us in “dialogue” twice. The first time was when a recruiter exiting the station pushed through two people holding signs and said, “You think you’re tough.” The second was a rather bizarre incident when a large bulldog-looking recruiter went to the station’s window, repeatedly banged his hands against the glass, and appeared to howl. Local media covered the event so there will likely be print and radio stories out in the next week.

This was the second action in POG’s counter-recruitment campaign. The campaign aims to reach those who are being recruited with alternative information about the reality of enlistment and military life while confronting military recruiters and their bases of operation. POG aims to present the recruited, as well as their parents/loved ones, with accurate and thorough information about their rights, the reality and commitments of enlistment and the recruitment process, as well as how these fit into a critique of overall U.S. foreign policy.

The next action POG is hoping to do in conjunction with other local groups will be a publicly announced protest designed to be as inclusive as possible.

In solidarity,

The Recruiting center is located at: 3712 Forbes avenue, 2nd floor Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Their phone number is: 412-683-1057

I was glad to see this action to interrupt military recruiting take place but blah, blah, blah words, words, words, I have my usual complaints about occurring only in the most liberal areas of the city and not taking it directly to the home bases of the right wing scum of the area.

Judging by the photos attached to this article, I do not think that the cops took this very seriously when they sent only one cunt who looks like she's 12 years old to control the crowd.

On an unrelated note, though I do not live in the city of Pittsburgh, I keep seeing commercials for the democratic candidates for mayor and find them all to be completely unacceptable. When will a viable resistance arise to take control of this city by the people and for the people?

The woman cop isn't a "cunt." She may be serve an oppressive system but she is a woman, not a "cunt." We don't need to treat our opponents with sexism even if they are on the opposite side. And, who knows? That cop might personally oppose the Iraq war.

Unfortunately, that last comment of mine was posted at 11:49 p.m. last night after several cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon. One of the many drawbacks to my alcoholic lifestyle is my liberal use of the word "cunt" when I have a few too many. I appologise if I offend.

always with the stereotypes....ok so i'm a "leftie" as they say. I work alot, two jobs up until recently. I put myself thru school. i'm not a hippie. I believe in the personal right to bear arms b/c with how repressive our gov't is getting, we will need to always be able to defend ourselves against it. So quit with the dumbass stereotypes, b/c they don't fit alot of people involved in these campaigns. The campaign is to address how recruiters lie and manipulate young people, especially the poor, to join the military and then screw them over. I have seen it happen to one friend after another. My uncle was in the Armed Forces for 20 years, tried recruiting, and said its awful and dishonest. If they can just level with people, and get all those rich republicans who love the war so much to do their share and join the useless war in Iraq, then things would be ok with me.

I too wish those evil "rich" republicans would grow up and fight their own wars. Oh wait, most of the military is registered as republican.

World view...shattered...Elitist pieces...Facts conflicting with my reality!

The Rich
by pogger Monday, May. 16, 2005 at 12:52 PM

ummm....The rich who make the decision to go to war rarely, if ever, actually fight in them (and if they are in the military they are certainly not on the front lines). dubya is the perfect example. Just because many of the people in the military have been duped in to voting against their own economic self interest (not that voting democrat would make any bit of difference) doesn't make them wealthy. The military makes non of the enlisted wealthy. Just the corporate whores at halliburton who write our energy policy and have our admistrations ear (or as in Cheney's case, are actually in the administration). If the elite had to actually fight the wars they profit from i think some very different decisions would be made.

Great post, Joe!
by Ed Monday, May. 16, 2005 at 6:28 PM

That was a very good, insightful post, Joe. You have hit the nail on the head.

But what do I know? I'm just an idiot, according to someone who thinks dismantling our military is a good idea. Just like the military-hating Klintons.

If I'm going to worry about being called an idiot, it won't be because a liberal said it.

On topic - most of the people who make up our military believe in what they are doing, but the liberals try to divide us by pretending our poor, unintelligent soldiers have been duped by a gov't that seeks to send them off to die. Well, libbies, I've got news for you. Most of them are smart enough to see through the liberal rhetoric.

I'm no naive kid. I've been on this Earth long enough to call bullshit when I see it. I'm calling bullshit on this occupation, bullshit on the reasons that changed daily for justification regarding the invasion, bullshit on the extreme right wing christians gaining power in this country, calling bullshit on people who lament the poor Iraqis opression yet wish to opress their next door neighbors, calling bullshit on the people with the yellow ribbons-hey, enrollment is down something like 44%, want to really support the troops then go enlist big talker, calling bullshit on the bleeding hearts crying over the death of one woman on feeding tubes while comfortably overlooking the deaths of the US soldiers who must perform their jobs at the whim of a megalomaniac administration who manipulated this country with FEAR to achieve its goals. I'm lastly calling bullshit on the cowards who swallow any piece of garbage information Fox news and O'Reilly spin, yet call anything else that conflicts with this propaganda "CONSPIRACIES". You bozos don't give a fuck about spreading democracy, freeing the opressed, your only concern is YOU. Hey, dummies, IRAQ DID NOT ATTACK THE US ON 911! THERE WERE NO TERRORISTS IN IRAQ PRIOR TO THE INVASION. THE TERRORISTS WHO ATTACKED US ON 911 WERE FROM SAUDI ARABIA YOU FUCKING NUMBSKULLS! Bush would have severed ties to his precious oil buddies if he had gone after the real terrorist havens and you fucking ignorant rednecks know it. I'm done, let the IMC be overrun with the bottom feeders, you guys can fight over who can drive in a circle at 200mph better, or who has the best fried dough.

Hiding of off-topic comments
by Danny P Monday, May. 30, 2005 at 2:10 AM

I've hidden an unusually large number of comments on this thread for being off-topic.

The Editorial Policy of the Pittsburgh Independent Media Center states that the editorial collective reserves the right to hide "comments to a post that do not pertain to the original post."

My understanding of this provision is based around the fact that the IMC is not here to provide a discussion forum. We are here to promote independent news and analysis, something which is hampered by people having discussions in the comments section of a legitimate news story.

Comments remain on this site because we feel it's necessary to enable people to add updates, corrections, or provide feedback to the original story. Comments that go beyond that are liable to be hidden.

It is still possible to view all of the comments that have been posted to this and other articles. If you are concerned about the fairness of my actions, feel free to do so and to contact me if you felt any comments were unjustly hidden. You can locate the comments by going to the main page, clicking "View Hidden Posts" in the lower right, checking off comments, and clicking Go. Find this story on the list, and click on it to see the page with all of its hidden comments.

Thank you for your understanding and further co-operation,

Daniel P.
