Voices for Animals couples dated against foie gras this Valentine's Day outside Isabela on Grandview in Mt. Washington. The event marked the one-year anniversary of the group's Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh campaign, which has gotten nearly a dozen local restaurants to stop selling foie gras.

On Valentine's Day, Voices for Animals couples came together to hold hands and hold signs together as they protested against Isabela on Grandview in Mt. Washington, a new target in their Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh campaign.
Foie gras is the oversized, diseased liver of a duck or goose. Foie gras producers force-feed the geese by jamming long metal pipes attached to pneumatic pumps down their throats. The birds' livers swell to about 10 times healthy size, leading to the liver disease hepatic lipidosis.
“We’re dating against foie gras this Valentine’s Day because torture is not a delicacy,” said Jon Farinelli, campaign coordinator for VFA’s Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh campaign. “Isabela on Grandview needs to stop selling gourmet cruelty.”
Monday's event marked the one-year anniversary of the campaign, which began last February 14 outside Baum Vivant. After less than two months of weekly protests, Baum Vivant stopped selling foie gras.
In the last year, nearly a dozen restaurants have stopped selling foie gras. Just last week, Le Pommier joined the club and committed to never again sell the delicacy of despair.
VFA's efforts have been echoed around the world. More than a dozen nations have banned foie gras production, including Israel -- formerly the world's third largest producer of foie gras -- which had its ban go into effect last month. California banned foie gras production in September, and similar legislation has been introduced in New York and Massachusetts.
