Free Speech Fight - Point State Park - July 4th!!
by A. Wobbly Sunday, Jul. 04, 2004 at 10:06 AM

PLEASE COME TO POINT STATE PARK FOR A FREE SPEECH FIGHT, JULY 4TH, STARTING AT 1pm

In the spirit of true liberty, free speech advocates in Pittsburgh are calling for community involvement in a FREE SPEECH FIGHT at Point State Park, July 4th, during the Regatta celebration. Free speech activists will arrive at the park around 1pm.

Labor activist, and No Sweatshops Bucco! organizer, Kenneth Miller was arrested at Point State Park for distributing anti-sweatshop baseball cards to Pittsburghers both inside and outside the park. Previously, four members of the No Sweatshops Bucco campaign were arrested at PNC Park for talking to baseball fans.

Yesterday, members of Voting is Power and ACORN were turned away at the park yet again, for trying to register voters. The NAACP is demanding voter registration be allowed in the park.

Last year, members of the Green Party were harassed for trying to speak with Pittsburghers at the same Regatta event. They have announced their intention to enter the park today and clarify their rights to free speech.

THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE OUR FREE SPEECH RIGHTS IS TO RESIST ENCROACHMENT BY THE STATE, AND THE ATTEMPTS TO LIMIT OUR ABILITIES TO SPEAK WITH EACH OTHER IN PUBLIC FORUMS.

THIS IS A CALL FOR PITTSBURGHERS TO COME DOWN EN MASSE TODAY, AND EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH.

SAY NO TO THE ATTEMPTS TO PRIVITIZE OUR SPACE!! TAKE DIRECT ACTION TO PRESERVE YOUR RIGHTS!!!

"Bring your political speech and literature and know that you have the right to leaflet on any square inch of God's green earth -- especially Point State Park, and PNC Park. We are going to extend and float our civil rights down the Ohio river and into the global south and onto the floor of global sweatshops." - "Captain America"

Campaign, and ACORN canvassers succesfully leafletted, petitioned, and spoke about Free Speech rights at Point State Park, from around 1:15pm to 2:30pm today. While eyeballed by police officers, the free speech fighters continued their activities, speaking with many interested Pittsburghers. No arrests occurred, and the public relations officer for the regatta event, who had previously been involved in the free speech dispute, had no official comment.
