CMU Occupations Have Begun!
by Friends Friday, Mar. 19, 2004 at 5:41 PM

The sixth floor of the CMU administration building has been locked down by protesters.

In protest of Carnegie Mellon University's extensive ties to the military we have locked down the 6th floor of CMU's Administration building (Warner Hall, located at Forbes and Morewood). We have not and will not enter any offices on the floor, nor will we in any circumstance damage University property. This is a peaceful action whose sole purpose is to draw attention to the immoral and unethical policies and programs of CMU. Their development of the killer robot dubbed "Gladiator" is an abomination and affront to those who are daily witness to the death and destruction currently being caused by the US military.

This action is in solidarity with the Pittsburgh Organizing Group's call for non-violent protests on March 20. We encourage President Cohon to immediately contact POG to begin discussions of ways to address the specific concerns articulated by the community.

it is my understanding that the participants did not plan on going out of their way to be visible from the street, so you very well might not see anyone.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. To think this will actually make a difference, this just continues to show the violent and erratic behavior of all you "liberals" with idealistic minds who think you can rule a country like the U.S. with one hand tied behind your back and just hoping that no one will step on anyone elses' toes. Come on, all this "activism" is going to get you a few crazy college student's support, but once they graduate, start maturing more and making money, which side are they going to side with you think?
Also, lets try to respect the U.S. Military servicemen around the world who are risking a lot more than all you protestors sitting around chugging beers the night before and running around causing disturbances...sigh, I usually am NOT this outspoken at all even when I watch people go on about how wrong the war is and everything but this is completely ridiculous...

Brilliant. Totally brilliant.

You have "locked down" the top floor of an administrative building over a weekend.

That's really good. Next what shall you do? I hear there are places that close for a whole week! Will you go there and "interrupt" their non-business too?

Thanks for doing this guys.

Corey, they *are* respecting the US military more than any of the flag-waving brigade coud ever do, it just takes a bit more than a knee-jerk reaction to work it out. Tell us how cutting their veteran's benefits when they come home minus a leg is "respecting" them for example - I'd love to hear your answer to that (quick, run to Jim Quinn and ask him...)

This is done in great spirit, but I wonder at its effectiveness.
Will the occupation be continuing into the work week? If its so quiet and out of the way how can you hope to "call attention" as was the stated desire? I read Sunday's (Post-G) article on the demonstrations and nothing like this was mentioned. Yeah I know all the ills of the "mainstream media." But that's how attention is called to these things, does anyone know if more than a handful of people on the internet are hearing about this?

as stated in another article.
by ... Tuesday, Mar. 23, 2004 at 11:07 AM

as stated in another post, the lock down was confirmed by a source inside cmu who stated that on march 19th some one/s locked the 6th flooe doors of warner together and stopped the elevator. sometime that night the lockdown was removed. it is unknown if the people shut down the area without being inside or whether they somehow escaped. Personally, I don't think there needs to be a lot of media attention for something if people aren't trying to remain until arrested. The point is to put pressure on cmu, which I would guess it helped in doing.

they weren't in there
by kitizen sane Tuesday, Mar. 23, 2004 at 7:18 PM

they locked it down without being inside.

figure it out... two doors, one elevator.

it didn't need to disrupt business, it only needed to show cmu what is possible, and can be repeated.

namaste,
kitizen
