Foie Gras, a french dish made from inflammed duck and geese livers, was the target of this Valentine's Day demonstration at Baum Vivant in Oakland. Activists from Voices for Animal Liberation distributed the following literature to passerbys and customers.

The dish is made in a cruel and abusive process that involves animals being force-fed several pounds of food a day into their stomachs, treatment that is so offensive that Foie Gras production has been outlawed in several countries around the world.

Foie Gras
by Michael Croland Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004 at 8:26 PM

Foie gras is that is literally a disease (hepatic lipidosis) marketed as a gourmet delicacy. These livers become so enlarged, up to 12 times the normal size, by force-feeding animals 1/10 of their average body-weight each day! Ducks and geese raised for foie gras suffer pre-slaughter deaths 10x as often as other factory-farmed animals (who themselves don't have it easy!).

I'd encourage everyone to check out http://www.gourmetcruelty.com for more info on foie gras, and http://www.goveg.com for more info about veganism/vegetarianism.

And please write to and/or call Baum Vivant, and demand that they stop selling foie gras!
