A Hazelwood woman was driving drunk when she struck and killed a bicycle rider on a neighborhood street, Pittsburgh police said this morning.

Eunice Bates, 47, of Winston Street, refused to take a breath test early this morning following the wreck and was charged with driving under the influence, police said. More charges might be filed once the investigation is complete.

The Allegheny County Coroner's Office said Robert Hemelrick, 32, of Hazelwood, was riding his bike on the 4100 block of Irvine Street about 11:30 p.m. when he was struck by Bates' Ford Expedition.

The impact knocked Hemelrick into the air and he landed on the pavement, the coroner's office reported. Hemelrick died about 12:20 a.m. at UPMC Presbyterian hospital, Oakland. An autopsy was scheduled for later today.

Investigators said the road was not icy, but they have not determined who was at fault. The city accident investigation squad is probing the wreck.
