3/30/03 March Update 4:45pm
by Wheatpaster Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 12:15 PM
Four Arrested, several inured by Swissvale police agression.
4:45pm: Organizers counted roughly 400 in attendance of the rally and roughly 300 marching. At least four people have been arrested, and over 15 are injured from police aggression. Swissvale Police Department reports those who were arrested are being processed at Allegheny County Jail on First Ave. downtown (yes, same location as 3-20-03). Pittsburgh Organizing Group is asking people to show support outside the building. Activists will be gathering at the old site of the Alexander Berkman Solidarity Camp ASAP (new name for solidarity camp is open for debate).
Among those pepper sprayed while on the sidewalk was a former police officer. Another officer who was on duty and unhappy with the provocative conduct of the police gave several marchers an antidote to the pepperspray and apologized for their co-workers conduct. The Citizens Police Review Board has confirmed they will defiitely pursue the innapropriate conduct of police. A civil suit is also being planned.

The ACLU wants to get in contact with people who witnessed the actions of the police at the march. If you can remember descriptive details of the situation, such as time of arrest, street names, people's names and/or what they looked like, please write the information down. The phone number is (412) 681-7736. Leave a message and they will get back to you soon.
As a resident of Edgewood Borough, I want to complain to the "appropriate authorities" at the borough about the biligerent behavior of the large, heavy-set, bald or shaved-head Edgewood cop. I was in the middle of the march and didn't see what went on, only people coming toward us who had been sprayed. I have spoken with a few people involved. I also spoke with a channel 4 camera man, not in an interview, who said that the people at the front who got sprayed were in the street. I would like to know what I'm talking about when I complain. Please get in touch with me if you have pertinent information. My number is 412-371-9722 or you can post it here and I will check back. Thanks

As we entered edgewoord, by the gas station, the edgewood police meet the march on the street and told us to leave the street. Most marchers complied, but several did not do so fast enough, and a large edgewood police officer that had no hair moved to pepper spray them. As the march progressed, a man that was standing right behind be made a comment to the police officer. The police officer pointed at the man, and said "You, i want you." or words to that effect. As he moved towards the sidewalk, marchers, including myself, moved in front of him to prevent that police officer from arresting him. The cop started at the crowd by pushing several protesters. After two or three shoves, he evidently decieded that he could not penetrate the crowd by himself. He removed his pepper spray and sprayed the crowd aroung t he man that had made the comment in a wide arc, spraying several people directly in thier eyes from point blank range. He then procceded to grab the man and arrest him.

Since the officer in question was not a Pittsburgh Police officer, but an Edgewood officer, how does one file complaints against that? Does anyone know if edgewood has a complaint board set up?

The Citizens Police Review Board has confirmed to the Thomas Merton Center that they are going to Executive Director Tim Vining also reports Mike Healey is also gathering evidence for defending those protesters who were killed, and lawyers affiliated with the ACLU are pursuing a civil action against the police (# is included above). Any help you can provide them would be a great help, and may possibly lead to police recognizing our constitutional rights in the near future.

I should never post while sleepy. :-) I meant members of the Citizen Police Review Board were in attendance on Sunday and told Tim Vining they will pursue action to the fullest. In addition, Mike Healy will be defending those who were ARRESTED.
