3/30/03 March Update 4:45pm
by Wheatpaster Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 4:44 PM

Four Arrested, several inured by Swissvale police agression.

4:45pm: Organizers counted roughly 400 in attendance of the rally and roughly 300 marching. At least four people have been arrested, and over 15 are injured from police aggression. Swissvale Police Department reports those who were arrested are being processed at Allegheny County Jail on First Ave. downtown (yes, same location as 3-20-03). Pittsburgh Organizing Group is asking people to show support outside the building. Activists will be gathering at the old site of the Alexander Berkman Solidarity Camp ASAP (new name for solidarity camp is open for debate).

Update 5:30pm
by Wheatpaster Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 5:25 PM

Update 5:30pm
Among those pepper sprayed while on the sidewalk was a former police officer. An officer who was on duty and unhappy with the provocative conduct of the police gave several marchers an antidote to the pepper spray and apologized for their co-workers conduct. The Citizens Police Review Board has confirmed they will defiitely pursue the innapropriate conduct of police. A civil suit is also being planned by lawyers connected to the ACLU.

What is wrong with you people
by Ben Dover Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 8:40 PM

Why is it when you people start to march all hell breaks loose. If you people would just sit at home and keep your mouth shut things would be better. Do you people think by you marching down south braddock ave it is going to stop the war. Are you nuts. As far as the police officer making arrests these men and women in blue are doing a job, unlike u people who disrupt my life by being on the news everyday with this dumb ass march. Are of you need to get a life and fiast you are not going to stop the war. so get a life.

re: Ben
by ian Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 8:48 PM

Ben, I am sorry that you were inconvinced by the march today. I feel like you have a couple of questions that I could help you answer. The first being
"Why is it when you people start to march all hell breaks loose"
I reason that "all hell breaks loose" is because the police have decieded to attack peaceful protesters. In fact, this is the second march in which protesters on the sidewalk were assualted and/or arrested.
As to your idea that we should all stay at home, I think that is great if you want to do it. But the consitution gives me the right, and to you, even if you dont exercise it, to protest for a redress of grievences. So while you may not want to protest anything, and that is fine, and accepted amoung our society, I have the right, and while continue ot exercise my right, to have my voice heard. The police officers do have a job. Many times incidents that occur are not the result of an individuals actions, but orders from their higher ups. But, like today, a police officer voilently attacked a crowd of people with out any provication. That is wrong. It is a rule of our society that violence is NOT ok against other people unless they are threatening you, and since i can promise you (I was standing right there) that the police officer was not being threatened, that makes his actions WRONG.

PROOFREAD
by Steve Sunday, Mar. 30, 2003 at 8:50 PM

If you are going to post anything, you should probably proofread it first. The protestors love nothing more than to make fun of stupid, ignorant pro-war people like you who can't read or write readable statements. Perhaps you should go read a book instead of watching 8+ hours of television a day.

Permits
by Pablohoney Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 1:27 AM

I am a staunch believer in civil rights and the Constitution of the United States. However, I am also a firm believer in society and laws. Why are no permits to march and demostrate being obtained? This keeps everyone happy- protestors and police alike. If permits are obtained, the police actually assist in the protest- security, route planning, shutting down streets and intersections... If no permit is obtained, or requested, then you have problems- arrests, fights between other groups, and general resentment. Why not work inside the system, where harmony can be achieved? The girl arrested today is a friend of mine from high school... Man, pepper spray burns like hell. Perhaps at least those three will be in favor of permits next time. Why is there such a desire to get arrested? Jail sucks.

liar
by citizen Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 2:14 AM

ian. you either were not there or you are a LIAR! i was there and was appauled with the actions of the protestors. do your homework before you spout off about what the police can do. you are not permitted to block ANY public passage, including the sidewalk. it does not matter if you are on the sidewalk, if you block it and fail to move when given an order by the police to move on, he has every right to arrest you(in fact it is his job to do so) if you do not respond to verbal commands he may start working up the ladder of force, you do not have to attack him first. he does not have to wait for that.

orders
by jwg Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 2:29 AM

But there had been no order give to move on.

the police demanded that we get on the sidewalks, which we did, the march stalled there because no one was sure if we were allowed to keep moving or not.

It was only after the tubby one decided to be an "army of one" and mace and beat people that we were told to keep moving. and we did then. so we actually were not disobeying the police when they decided to use 'pre-emptive force'

On Permits
by j Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 8:58 AM

Pablohoney wonders why we don't have a permit to march. This is a good question.

Unless I am mistaken, it takes 45 days and some hassle to earn a permit to march in the street. That's one reason why many (though not all) of our marches are not permitted.

In addition, I would ask: why should we need a permit to use a road? Why is our announced intention to exercise our first-amendment rights in public less legitimate than other uses of a road?

idiots
by citizen Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 4:23 PM

I think all you people who are so opposed to this war should take a step back and look at the big picture. True we have killed several citizens in iraq but how does that begin to compare with the over one million of his own citizens that saddam has killed. We are trying to help the people of that country and our brave soldiers are putting thier lives on the line for those people. So all of you who keep protesting the war for whatever stupid reasons you do just think of the millions more that would be killed if he stayed in power and i hope you sleep well at night knowing that you support that kind of ruthless killer.

Explain this to me
by concerned citizen Monday, Mar. 31, 2003 at 7:11 PM

Why do you knowingly and intentionally break the law and then try to hold the police accountable. Your group was clear that it was illegal for you to institute that march on S. Braddock Ave. Why are you surprise that the police made moves to stop you. How in the world is your violence going to lead to peace. make this make sense for me. What are you really trying to accomplish. Yeasterday 3/30/03 was national pray day for our troops/children. why didn't you spend this time praying and filling the churches rather than making a scene that was violent and disruptive to others. How is stopping traffic on a busy highway promote your cause for peace. It is clear to me that you have a hidden agenda.

RED, WHITE AND BLUE !!
by ALEXANDER LEMONJELLO Wednesday, Apr. 02, 2003 at 4:55 AM

OK ALL YOU ANTI WAR PEOPLE I HAVE AN IDEA. HOW ABOUT FIRST THROW AWAY THE GRUNDGE HIPPIE LOOK AND BECOME A RESPECTABLE PERSON. NEXT SINCE YOU HATE THIS WAR AND ITS LEADERS, GET THE HELL OUT AND GO TO IRAQ. I AM SURE SADDAM COULD USE YOU ALL FOR SHIELDS AND HUMAN SEX OBJECTS. HE IS A SICK ASS WHO NEEDS TO BE KILLED. AND WHO BETTER THAN THE AMERICANS TO DO IT. THOSE TURBIN TOWEL WEARING ASSHOLES WOULD KILL YOU AND THINK NOTHING OF IT. BUT AS LONG AS HE IS WATCHING ALL OF YOU SHIT SMELLING HOT ASSHOLE SEAPING BETWEEN THE TOES SMELLING ASSHOLES DOING THIS, YOU ARE SHOWING HIM HE IS INVINCIBLE. AND DO NOT LET THE PEPPER SPRAY SCARE YOU, IT WAS THE SAME COLOR SPRAY LIKE THE COLOR OF THE WATER IN YOUR WASHERS. OH THATS RIGHT, YOU ALL DO NOT USE THEM.
ONE MORE THING : SINCE YOU ALL CLAIM THAT YOUR RALLYS ARE "PEACEFUL" ,WHY DONT YOU PEOPLE UNCOVER YOUR FACES AND FACE YOUR CONCERN IN THE EYES. ALL YOU SHOW IS THAT YOUR INTENTIONS ARE HOSTILE. AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THE RULES ARE NOT TO BE FOLLOWED. AND THAT IS WHEN THE "POLICE" WHO YOU ALL CALL " BULLIES" ACT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO RESTORE THE DISORDER THAT YOU ALL HAVE CAUSED. HAIL TO ALL THE POLICE !! AT LEAST ADMIT THIS ANTI WAR THUGS, NO POLICEMAN IS AFRAID TO SHOW THEIR FACES, THEY FACE YOU AND STAND BY WHAT THEY ARE SWORN TO DO. WHY CANT YOU ALL DO THE SAME. I BET YOU WOULD SEE A BETTER RAPPORT IF THAT WERE TO HAPPEN.
I HOPE ALL THE NAME CALLING HERE IS COOL. I MEAN AFTER ALL YOU HIPPIES KEEP BASHING THE EDGEWOOD OFFICER FOR BEING LARGE. FROM WHAT I SEEN, THE WOMAN CRYING ON THE HOOD OF THE POLICE CAR HAS A FEW FLAWS. 1ST, SHE HAS ATE MCDONALDS WAY TOO MUCH, HER LOWER BLOAT AT LEAST KEPT HER FROM FALLING TO THE GROUND AND SHE SMELLS LIKE SHIT. AND THE MAN WHO WAS WEARING PINK AND BLUE SHOES, WHATS THAT ABOUT. I MEAN IF YOU HAVE BALLS, PROVE IT. THE PUNKY BREWSTER LOOK IS OUT.

Mr. Lemonjello, you are a true american! This thinking is why the majority of world opinion is against us. If we choose not to be isolationist in our actions, we cannot be isolationsist when it comes to world opinion.

And seriously, if I have to explain to people one more time that I do have a job, I do wash myself and myclothes and I do wear a tie. And after last sunday I will be wearing a mask, just to look pretty for all the little undercover officers that like to take pictures and compile dossiers when people are excersising their rights.

And to answer your next inevitable argument. I love that i have the right to speak against my government, that's why I'm happy in this country, and I will not "love it or leave it." If you're so anxious to have a situation where people who are against the authority to be out down with extreme prejudice, the _you_ go to iraq, and you can blindly believe what your government tells you.

Complaints about City of Pittsburgh Police may be directed to the Citizen Police Review Board 412-765-8023. We can't investigate Edgewood police, but want to hear from those affected by the force used - in particular I would like to hear from the white male pepper-spray victim wearing jeans and a red hoodie who was next to me on the `observer' side of the street.

Repsonce to Ian's Comments
by Shappy Thursday, Apr. 03, 2003 at 12:05 PM

Ian,
Just so you are aware, the only reason why protestors on the sidewalk were sprayed was because they either got in the way of officers making an arrest or actually tried grabbing people aware from the police when officers were making the arrest. I am sure if you were on a street and 200 people came at you yelling and screaming and grabbing at you, you would like to have a can of pepper spray to use.

nope, sorry shappy. the officer in question sprayed people he didn't like who weren't interfering with him. I was one of them. if you yelled at him, pointed at him, or anything else he didn't like he threatened you and some people he sprayed.

WHAT SETS THIS NATION APART IS THE FACT THAT WE CAN VOICE OUR OPINION ANDOR OPPOSITION ABOUT ANYTHING WE WANT TO. UNFORTUNATELY THE CITIZENS OF IRAQ DO NOT HAVE THAT RIGHT. THEY ARE RULED BY A CRUEL AND EGOTISTICAL DICTATOR WHO HAS PLACED HIS OWN COUNTRY MEN IN HARMS WAY. BUT WHEN VOICING YOUR OPINION GETS IN THE WAY OF PEOPLE GOING ABOUT THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES THEN IT HAS TO STOP. I AM A RESIDENT OF THE EDGEWOODSWISSVALE AREA AND HAVE NOTHING BUT COMPLIMENTS FOR BOTH POLICE DEPARTMENTS. THESE PEOPLE FACE DANGER AND ADVERSITY EVERYDAY AT WORK AND WHEN YOU HAVE 10 POLICE OFFICERS TRYING TO KEEP A COUPLE HUNDRED PEOPLE OUT OF THE STREET SO THAT THEY ARE NOT HURT IT IS A TRYING TASK. ESPECIALLY WHEN A COUPLE OF LOUD MOUTHED IGNORANT PEOLE WILL NOT LISTEN THEN THE POLICE MUST ACT. GOD BLESS OUR POLICE OFFICERS, GEORGE BUSH AND OUR TROOPS!!!

MY FAULT....
by Kid that was PEPPER-SPRAYED Saturday, Apr. 05, 2003 at 9:52 PM

I admit it. I was wrong to ignore the edgewood police officers repeated request to dispurse. I decided to have " I'm a tough guy, look at me syndrome" episode that day. I should have just did what that officer told me to do, But like I said I wanted some "ACTION" and I got myself into a whole heap of trouble. I thought it would be cool to run my BIG-MOUTH, but instead I was shown that I'm just a little pussy in a big spread.
My face is still burning, and I think my anti-war view has changed. I'm for AMERICA, and I'm for our FIGHTING AMERICANS. You know what else, if my mom wouldn't have babied me when i was a kid, and maybe she let me play in the dirt, instead of with my sisters clothes, maybe I would have the BALLS to join the MARINES and storm the sand dunes of IRAQ. I just want to say I'm sorry to all the police officers. Next time I think I'll stay in the lunchroom or maybe go to the library, or maybe get a job application instead of listening to my dirty hippie friends.

Incidentally, I love this country. I am also totally and completely opposed to this war. There is nothing contradictory about those two statements.

Just look at that message from the Pepper Spray Kid. He somehow claims that the Pepper Spray incident has caused him to turn a new leaf. He blames permissive parenting for his previous mis-deeds. Get real. Who but a right-winger would write such a message. Of course the intention is to hijack this message board.

Our country was founded on the principal of polltical debate. The individuals who are engaging in name-calling and questioning people's patriotism are the ones who are really acting in a way that is Un-American.

damn, if anyone that hated protestors, that have no idea what they are talking about ,as much as I do, knew about this site, your prescious little message board would have been hijacked weeks ago.

Wake the hell up. The war is going on, stop protesting, there isn't shit you can do about it. Support your troops. I am anti war but once that first bomb dropped I shut the hell up. Why you may ask? Because those troops are fighting the battle now and they don't need to come home feeling like they were fighting for a country that is against them. Vietnam ring any bells. My father is a vietnam vet and is staunchly against war, but he even reminded me that our troops gain morale from what they hear is going on here at home. Screw Bush, but shut the hell up about the war and support the troops.

I AM A POLICE OFFICER
by DAVID Wednesday, Apr. 23, 2003 at 1:47 PM

I AM A POLICE OFFICER. I BELIEVE ANY AMERICAN HAS THE RIGHT TO PROTEST AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE GOVERMENT.I AM PROUD TO BE IN A COUNTRY THAT ALLOWS IT CITIZENS TO DO SUCH. I AM PROUD TO WEAR THAT BADGE ON MY CHEST. AS A POLICE OFFICER AND A CITIZEN I DO NOT THINK THE 1ST AMENDMENT INCLUDES THE RIGHT TO INTERFER WITH FREE MOVEMENT OF OTHER CITIZENS. WHETHER PEDESTRIAN OR MOTORIST. I DO NOT THINK THAT WALKING DOWN A ROADWAY ENDANGERING MOTORISTS LIVES ALONG WITH YOUR LIVES IS JUSTIFIED. I DO NOT WORK WITH ANY OF THE DEPARTMENTS LISTED ABOVE NOR DO I PERSONALLY KNOW ANY OF THE OFFICERS OR MARCHERS INVOLVED. I AM NOT JUSTIFYING NOR AM I CONDONING ANY OF THE OFFICER ACTIONS OR MARCHERS ACTIONS. I THINK THAT IT IS BULLSHIT THAT ANY GROUP HAS TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT TO ENVOKE IT CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. MAYBE CALLING THE RESPECTIVE POLICE DEPARTMENT(S) WHERE YOU PLAN ON MARCHING AND ANNOUNCING YOUR INTENTIONS, WITHOUT A PERMIT, AND THE APPROXIMATE NUMBER OF MARCHERS WILL ALLOW THOSE RESPECTIVE DEPARTMENTS TO GET AN APPROPRIATE NUMBER OF OFFICERS OUT TO CONTROL THE FLOW OF THE MARCH AND TRAFFIC. I BELIEVE THAT 99% OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THESE MARCHES ARE NOT TRYING TO DISRUPT THE PEACE. UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE MORONS THAT GO WITH ALTERNATIVE MOTIVES AND RUIN IT FOR THAT 99%.

There have been thousands of marches worldwide since 3/30/03, including a handful in Pittsburgh. You should keep a closer eye on this site, we've had a lot of news lately!
