community-based, non-corporate, participatory media
Photo from the Pittsburgh IMC hosted "making media workshop" on 18 January 2003.
all in all i thought the workshop went well. hopefully we'll be having more in the future, so if you were there and want to tell us what you thought- what the hits were and what the misses were- that'd be great.

I thought the workshop went well, B++. The content of the two trainings I attended were informative and for the most part empowering. I left wanting to start snooping around for a major investigative expose'. Serving vegan food, tea, and coffee was a fabulous idea and will surely bring me back for the next training ;-)
So, as far as criticism: The biggest problems was the fact 300+ left-leaning yinzers were in D.C. that morning. I guess the next training will not be scheduled for the same time as a National convergence and should have a bigger turnout.
My major nit-pic: At times the discussion tended to lose its focus away from journalism and IMC issues. At times activists in attendance drifted into story-swapping and, at its worst, mobilization pitches for thier own pet campaigns. I suppose some organizers see new faces and jump directly into recruitment mode, but there is a time and place. I would like to see facilitators discourage this, possibly telling people to save it for snack time, after the training, or organize thier OWN damn mobilization complete with free hummus and apple butter.
yeah, i know exactly what you mean about when the discussion was not on topic. i'm not much at public speaking and being in charge, but i definitely feel like that's somethin i/we need to adress more strongly next time. *sigh*
but all in all, a good time. yes.
