January 18th 2003 was an active day in the anti-war movement both in the United States and abroad. Peace rallies occured in Washington DC, San Francisco, Tokyo and Rawalpindi, Pakistan to name a few. Sponsored by ANSWER, the Washington DC rally and subsequent march were attended by 250+ Pittsburgher's, many of whom took one of the six busses organized by the Thomas Merton Center. Crowd estimates are hovering around 200,000 people in attendance marking an attendence far greater than that of the October Washington DC ANSWER rally. While the police were present, few were wearing any kind of specialized tactical gear. Overall, the rally and march went without major incident though there was a report of at least two Pittsburgher's being struck by a police officer in an effort to help a fellow activist.

Want a pretzel? $3 each, two for $5. There were quite a few vendors selling overpriced wares at the event.

The police were seen, but were overall well behaved. At times they seemed very concerned about people who didn't support the war stepping on the sidewalk.

Answer is lame
by - Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at 6:26 AM

IA is lame. That was the worst event I've ever attended. There was no energy and little creativity from the crowd. Three of us from Pittsburgh were hit by the police (along with about 20 other people) when we tried to help someone getting arrested for trying to burn a flag. IA wouldn't let anyone announce that 2 people had been arrested so bail money could be raised. They said it would take time away from Jessica Langes speech.

Not ANSWERS fault
by pjd Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at 9:11 AM

I thought most of the ANSWER speakers wer trying to lead the crowd in chants, but they fell flat...

The main reason for the lack of energy at both the O26 and J18 events and seemed to be the preponderance of white-bread suburbanites, who are pretty much bred for docility; you cant get a good loud spirited chant from them for nothing! That guy's parents in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" come to mind.

Don't get me wrong, it is very positive to have so many anti-war whitebreads out there, but loudness and confrontation just isn't in their culture.

Why not be glad and grateful that the suburbanite whitebreads have, at last, shown up--instead of whining that they dont speak YOUR LANGUAGE? The pilgrimage to Peace is a process for ALL OF US; give Middle Americans a chance to learn that we are not demons after all.

Progressives decry the corporate media for not telling "Middle-America" the truth about our political/national life, and so we should. It seems absurd, contradictory, and even hypocritical, then, to criticize the inmates of Middle America for having been conditioned as they have. An event like Saturday's is a wonderful opportunity for "deprived" citizens to be met with warm and hospitable hearts by the progressive community. They are overcoming profoundly dehumanizing programming by the mass media when they show up for such an event. Shall we not welcoming instead? Surely that will make it much more likely that they will embrace a more activist stance in the future.

my dad has a whitebeard
by garret Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 12:11 PM

My dad has a whitebeard and was at the D.C. march with me. While we have talk about his generations failure to truly inact change, his generation's ideologies were the breeding ground for my personal developement, wich has broaded from there. I was glad that my Dad felt that it was important to show his solidarity with others in D.C. Sometimes its hard to get a 62 year old man to scream and rant. Being there is a direct action. Lets respect those he came before lest we repeat their failings.

Of course _all_ are welcome, re-read my last sentence.

Peace .... as a lifestyle choice.. when integrated into ones life as an organizational structure & culture....does not include loudness and confrontation
But us whitebread pro-peace activists... sure acknowledge you for your youthful enthusiasm! IMAGINE! If we all could embrace no loudness and confrontation form the current administration.
You cannot drive out that which you abhore in others.. by mirroring it back at them...
You will learn little grasshopper.... we all must

Grannies?
by Josh Murry Wednesday, Mar. 12, 2003 at 5:00 PM

Give me a break! These Grannies are the same people who vote against building schools. It's because of these people that I have to go to a school where half of the rooms are either freezing or burning up and this occurs every month of the year. I want new schools, and I also want peace. Yes I want peace be peace is obtained by dropping bombs, killing Saddam and setting up a PEACEFUL nation in Iraq. The point is that if we responded to the bombing of Pearl Harbor by setting out the TREE HUGGERS to protest, we'd still have problems with Japan and Japan would be nowhere near their economic successes that they've had. It's because of the World War that we have Toyotas and all of the toys that say made in Japan. We also have that grest Chinese/Japanese food. The bottom line is that the man that called himself a president, Bill Clinton, who abused his privillages to watch X rated videos on Air Force One, have an affair in the White House, Lie under oath, and waste our money on the funding for foreign abortion centers, this man had 8 years to follow his tree hugger ways and try to make peace but he failed and failed miserably just like everything else he did. Bush is our president because he has a spine and he knows what America wants and what America wants is for those people responsible for 9-11 to die along with that son-in-law killing Saddam. Basically I just want those tree-hugger-peace-wanting-Clinton-supports to stay of our streets and move to Iraq because that's where you belong!!!!!!
